Gnome trail

The gnome doors - painted and decorated by students of the Assink Lyceum - take you past characteristic places in Haaksbergen. Children can read and listen to stories and poems from the gnome book at each door.

"The gnome route in Haaksbergen has a mix of stories from history and stories from the present. All the stories are inspired by Haaksbergen. The Gnome Route is a tribute to people and organizations that have contributed to the village.

Special places

For example, come to Museum Buurtspoorweg, where you will find the cottage of gnome Henk and with station cat Jack. The best days of the year for Jack and Henk, are the days when the trains run on steam again. With all the happy people coming for a ride Henk and Jack feel like they are in a dream.

On Landgoed het Lankheet there is a lot to do. Gnome Gerrit- Jan never wants to leave. His family has lived there since 1188, he knows every meadow, every tree, every hedge.

Also, the Water Mill is a place where you will meet gnomes. For almost 5 centuries, the water mill has stood strong. It is the water flow that keeps the big wheels moving all these centuries. The gnomes like to live in the mill. They help out, by chasing away woodworms. They collect little bits of flour and oil, which they may quietly take without asking.

Walk the route yourself

The route starts on the forecourt of De Kappen. Here you can also buy the €4.50 booklet. Read the poem of gnomes Ria and Vincent here. Did you also see their little door?
