Museum Buurtspoorweg

A day at Museum Buurtspoorweg is a real experience for old and young alike. A first-class day out. Come and admire and experience.

Steam train ride

In the pulled carriages, day-trippers relax and enjoy the scenic ride. Children run enthusiastically through the historic carriages, and train enthusiasts ask the conductor about the ins and outs of the rolling stock. For many visitors, the train ride in a real steam train is the highlight of a visit to Museum Buurtspoorweg.

Go on a voyage of discovery and experience the fascinating past of the local railway between Haaksbergen and Boekelo. Only here can you feel the smell of burning coal in your nostrils, the original upholstery and the carvings of the carriages under your fingers. Only here does the wind blow through your hair as you watch the Twente countryside glide past you through the open windows.

A trip back in time

A visit starts with a walk around the yard of Haaksbergen or Boekelo station. Volunteers answer questions and demonstrate how to change signals and points. The workshop and locomotive shed show off old steam and diesel trains. Compliments abound. What an extensive collection you have here'. The volunteers are no longer surprised by these admiring remarks. Many people know us mainly for our steam train rides. But we want to tell the whole story about the history of local railways in the eastern part of the Netherlands. How did people used to travel? What did the arrival of the railway mean for the region? How does a steam train work?

Party for children

The whistle sounds. The train is leaving! Look out of the window. But you can also walk to the front. Then you can see for yourself how the old locomotive pulls the wagons forward. The head of the train waves the flag and when the conductor comes by, you just cut your own ticket. There is plenty to see and discover in the rest of the museum too:

  • Jack the station cat likes to take you on a voyage of discovery. On the way through the steam depot, the workshop and the train, you will playfully learn the funniest things about (steam) trains.↵ Visit Gait in his ploughshack.
  • Also visit Gait in his shed. He knows everything about working on the tracks.
  • At Boekel station you will find cool model railways, play tables and a mini cinema.
  • After the voyage of discovery, it's time to relax with a drink and a snack in the Goods shed. There you will find great colouring pictures, interactive train games and you can dress up as a train driver or conductor.
  • Finally, in the museum shop you will find the nicest souvenirs to remember an unforgettable day at Museum Buurtspoorweg.

And, oh yes.... did you know that a return ticket allows you to go back and forth as often as you want?

Please note that departures are currently only possible from Haaksbergen station.
