Schaapskooi & Bezoekerscentrum Horstervennehoes
On the edge of the Haaksbergerveen moor you will find the beautiful accommodation of Schaapskudde Haaksbergen. In the yard ‘Horstervennehoes’ a spacious sheepfold where the sheep can stay overnight and a ‘sheep shed’, rebuilt in its old state, which has been set up as an educational centre.
Visitor centre
The former ‘sheep pen’ from Buurse serves as an educational centre and resting point for a cup of coffee or soda with a treat. There is a permanent exhibition about the sheep herd and the grazing area ‘Haaksbergerveen’ on display. There are also interactive games for children and a small playground next to the terrace. From the education centre, you can go into the moor in search of the flock. The education centre is open some afternoons (see opening hours). Visits outside opening hours and rental rooms are possible for groups (families, companies).
Useful grazing
The sheep herd is more than just petting sheep. They are simply necessary for the management of Haaksbergerveen. Sheep are very good at nibbling out the grass between the heather and keeping in check other fast-growing plants such as arrowstraw and eagle fern. High bog species such as peat moss can thus thrive better again.
Several cycle routes pass through the sheep flock's yard. A nice dismount for a look around and a cup of coffee and treats.

Route to the Sheepfold
Coming from Haaksbergen: from Buurserstraat, follow the signs ‘Schaapskooi’. On Schansweg, cross the bridge and then turn left into Welmerweg. Then take the first right onto De Schapendrift. At a bad, boggy road, park the car on the left side of the Welmerweg and walk about 300 metres to the Schaapskooi.
