Would you like to explore your surroundings in a unique way? Millions of treasures can be found all over the world, and in Haaksbergen too there are plenty hidden away. Hidden treasures that you probably pass by without having a clue what is really there. With geocaching you go on a search for these mysterious treasures!

What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is a scavenger hunt using a GPS receiver or phone with the function of finding a so-called "cache" aka hiding place somewhere in the world. Using GPS coordinates, you can find various treasures in hidden locations. Geocaches come in all possible variations from tiny tubes to huge boxes. Searching and finding a geocache is very entertaining, you discover something new every time.

Geocaching is extremely popular in the Netherlands, with 36,000 geocaches currently hidden across the country.

How do I start with geocaching?

You want to search for your first 'cache' but what do you need? Beginning geocachers often choose to download a smartphone with the Geocaching app on iOS or Android, you may also choose to purchase a GPS device. Advantages with your smartphone is that you probably already own one, and after downloading the app can quickly start treasure hunting. The downside is that you have to use data which may incur costs, also the GPS receiver in a smartphone is less accurate. Finding an end point is easier on a GPS device. Buying a gps receiver is pricey therefore, we recommend downloading the app on your smartphone first to see if you will like it.

I found a geocache, now what?

Each treasure has a logbook in which you can write your name. Then hide the geocache again in the exact same location. Beware of a mugler! This is someone who does not hunt for treasure, but hangs around the treasure you have found. Muglers are not familiar with the game and sometimes plan to destroy or make the cache disappear. After finding a treasure cache you can exchange or add items, the idea is not to only take items from the cache, but also to put back something of equal or great value such as a nice keychain.
