A visit to Haaksbergen is truly only complete if you also visit the diverse countryside. Natuurmonumenten manages the areas.

Buurserzand
If you like varied landscape then I would definitely go to the Buurserzand. The color of the purple heather in summer, the silence interrupted by the call of the green woodpecker. There are still rare bellflower gentians in bloom and with a little luck you will come face to face with a roe deer. The landscape with its age-old juniper bushes, forests, fens and loose cover of the Bommelas, surprises you with every step. Viewpoint Rietschot is a perfect spot for bird watching. There you have a beautiful panorama over the heathland. The Buursermeerje invites you to take a break and is ideal for paddling in the summer. Don't forget to reward yourself afterwards at our info center De Wakel and treat yourself to a cup of coffee with a delicious apple pie from the care farm Erve Meijerinkbroek. And take as a souvenir a bag of delicious handmade chocolates from the JP van den Bent foundation.

Witte Veen
The Witte Veen is completely different again. A cross-border bog area where many smugglers used to earn their living. Some smuggling routes are now hiking trails and so you walk along old paths and border stones from the Netherlands to Germany and back again. There is a good chance that along the way you will meet the herd of Scottish Highlanders, who graze to keep the area open. In the Witte Veen you get lost in time. Here you walk through a border region where you can still experience the landscape of the past. Old dirt roads, oak lanes, heath, forest, moor and water constantly alternate. With the historic Haarmühle in Germany as an atmospheric starting point. In the moor there are also some peat lakes where you can often see water and shore birds, such as the shoveler and tufted duck, little grebe and the greenshank.

Grintenbosch
Those who love the English landscape style should definitely visit the Grintenbosch! On the outskirts of Haaksbergen lies this beautifully landscaped forest with many different types of trees. Ideal for a short visit. Clear, wheelchair friendly, so also ideal for baby carriages.

The Wakelexpress
Have you ever thought of being driven through nature? In the Buurserzand you can. Take a seat in the electric cart and be driven through the Buurserzand and Haaksbergerveen. The landscape passes by like a great panorama. On the way our guides will tell you everything about the area, you will take a look at the los hoes Bommelas and enjoy the viewpoint at the Steenhaarplassen. Please note! Currently it is not possible to take a ride in the Wakelexpress.
